May's Feature – Segmented Pen
My feature for May 2007 is segmented pens. Segmented pens are new at Harding Pens. A segmented pen is
created by splicing together different contrasting woods and then drilling and turning the wood in the normal way.
The way the wood is spliced can create different effects. The type shown here is a double cross pen. Four splices
of light coloured maple are laminated into a block of Redheart. The effect is an interesting series of curves created
by the cross cut splices. The images above show the differences as you look at the pen from different angles. This
look can be done on any pen, but is more dramatic on a larger diameter pen style.
