August's Feature – Custom Desk Pen Set - Wedding Set
This month's feature is a set of desk pens for signing the wedding register. The wood is Walnut, all pieces were cut
from the same board. The customer wanted a rustic look to the stand. It took a bit of looking, but I found a Walnut
board with bark still attached. The stand was tricky to make. I had to finish the wood without loosing the bark, then
the stand was drilled, finish sanded and coated in many layers of Polyurethane. The inscription was laser
engraved on a brass plaque. The pens are each laser engraved with the bride and groom's names and the
wedding date. I added a handwritten blessing to the underside of the stand.
All the engraving work was done by Todd Williams of Laser Engraveables, in Pottageville. Todd has a laser
engraving business close to my place and has been doing all my engraving. Todd does excellent work.
This piece was unusual in that it has three pens. The bride told me she wanted a pen for each of their mothers and
one for them to keep.
The pens all have extensive beading and other classic spindle forms. This work too quite a while, but was a lot of
fun.
