Pen Refill Replacement Information:
Twist Pens - Cross Refills:
Most ballpoint wood pens use this refill. The slim twist, European twist, and Greek style
use Cross compatible refills. Note: Cigar pens use a Parker refill.
To open these pens, grasp the top and bottom sections and pull. The sections are held by
a friction fit. Be sure not to loose the loose the centre-band. After the sections are apart, the
plastic end of the ink cartridge is visible at the top of the bottom section. Simple unscrew
the plastic end in a counter-clockwise direction to remove the cartridge.
To reassemble, screw in a new Cross-compatible ink refill cartridge in a clockwise
direction and then push the top and bottom sections back together, do not forget the centre-
band.
Desk Pens - Cross Refills:
These pens allow access to the refill by unscrewing the metal nib in a counter-clockwise
direction. Be careful, there is a small spring inside the top of the pen and this can fall out.
Keep the spring in the pen during the refill change.
The replacement Cross refill needs to have the plastic end cap removed before it can be
used in a desk pen. Pull to remove the plastic end cap. Discard the cap since it is not
required for desk pen applications.
Place the refill in the pen, ensuring the spring is still in the top and screw the nib section
back on in a clockwise direction.
Cigar Pen - Parker refill
These pens have a friction fit between the upper and lower sections of the pen. Pull the top
and bottom sections apart. Take the lower pen section and unscrew the end of the
transmission in a counter-clockwise direction. This will expose the refill cartridge. Pull the
old cartridge out and replace with a new Parker compatible refill. Screw the transmission
end back in by turning it in a clockwise direction. Push the top and bottom sections back
together.
Note: some gel-ink parker refills are not totally compatible and are too long to fit into some
pens that use Parker ball point ink refills.
Fountain Pens:
Fountain Pens use a disposable international refill cartridge. Sometimes these cartridges
will be called a Waterman compatible cartridge.
I recommend changing the cartridge over some old newspaper or paper towels to make
clean-up easier.
Be sure to clean the pen before switching between ink suppliers or colours. Different inks
don’t always mix well. Cleaning instructions can be found on the Pen Care page.
To remove the old cartridge, unscrew the nib section in a counter-clockwise direction. The
old cartridge should be attached to the upper end of the nib section. Grasp the plastic
cartridge and pull to remove. This is a good time do any cleaning, before the new cartridge
is installed. Removing and cleaning the nib from the nib section is easier when there is no
ink cartridge attached. Cleaning instructions are found on the Pen Care page.
The new cartridge is pushed on with the narrower end of the cartridge towards the upper
end of the nib section. The end of the ink cartridge gets pierced as it is installed.
Fountain Pen Converter Pumps:
Fountain pens can use a small refillable cartridge (called a converter pump) to allow the
use of bottled ink. The pump is removed and installed the same as the disposable
cartridge. Use of a converter pump is explained on the Pen Care page.

Caution: Most fountain pens use a threaded attachment to contain the refill; do not
attempt to pull these apart or you might damage the thread. These pens need to be
unscrewed to access the ink cartridge - see information below.
